What is stress?
Stress is often called a twentieth century disorder, which is born out of man's chase of progress and the complexities that follow it. Stress affects all- rich, poor, man, woman, young and old. It is called a disease of the modern times. When life takes a steep turn and everything seems to be going the wrong way, the bravest of men undergo a low phase called stress which has both physical and psychological consequences.

What happens when you are stressed?
Stress has its
physical as well as mental consequences that ruin a person's life. Although the sex of the person causes some differences, generally the effects are similar. Age may be a factor to consider. At times it so happens in life that one becomes ill in the process of recovering from an emotionally taxing experience. One may stay composed, firm and brave enough throughout the experience but just as the trauma is about to end, one succumbs to an ailment. There may be symptoms like back ache, fever, headache, loss of appetite or insomia. These are basically the body's way of responding to emotional stress. It is very well said that "Stress is created by what we think rather than by what has actually happened". Stress, in small amounts, can be good but too much of stress disorderly in life.

Effects of stress on the body:
Stress, as believed by many experts, can crumble the nervous system. When the extra chemicals in our bloodstream don't get used up or the stress situation persists, it makes our body prone to mental and physical illnesses the effects of stress on the body are:
* Aching muscles
* Stomach problems
* Diarrhea
* Constipation
* Cramps
* fatigue

Effects of stress on the mind:
In today's world of cut- throat competition, factors like relationship demands, professional demands, traumatic experiences, financial problems and environmental factors can cause stress in a person's life.
The effects of stress on the mind include:
* Depression, spontaneous crying, despair and hopelessness
* Anxiety
* Panic attacks
* Fearfulness
* Compulsive and obsessive behaviors
* Feeling out of control
* Irritability, angry and resentment
* Emotional numbness
* Withdrawal from normal routine and relationships
Emotional stress is generally passed on from one generation to another. Children of stressed parents have a higher risk of being stressed out and tensed at encountering difficult and challenging situations. But it is also possible that such children learn to take such challenges, face them boldly and emerge as winners.
